The deal
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign defender Honest Ahanor. The two clubs have struck a deal worth £40million — around €46m — including add-ons, with personal terms agreed on a long-term contract and the 18-year-old granted permission to travel to London for a medical. The transfer could be completed by Friday, and comes with our summer business expected to continue right up to the window closing on Tuesday 1 September.
The fee represents a hefty profit for Atalanta, who only signed Ahanor from Genoa last summer for an initial €16m plus €4m in add-ons. Earlier in this window the Bergamo club rejected a €34m bid from Brighton and had been holding out for closer to €60m. Genoa, meanwhile, retain a 5% sell-on clause — so his boyhood club will bank a slice of the fee.
Ahanor becomes Chelsea's second signing from Atalanta this summer, following Marco Palestra — further evidence of a warm and productive line between the two clubs' recruitment teams.
Who is Honest Ahanor?
Born in Aversa in February 2008 to Nigerian parents, Ahanor came through the Genoa academy he joined at the age of five. He announced himself in stunning fashion, making his Serie A debut against Juventus on 28 September 2024 aged just 16 years and 218 days — the youngest player to feature in that Serie A season, and the first player born in 2008 to start a top-flight match in Italy.
Atalanta moved for him in July 2025, and he wasted no time. In his debut campaign in Bergamo he started 15 of Atalanta's 36 Serie A games and made 35 appearances across all competitions as the side finished seventh — nine of them in the Champions League, a competition he first sampled with a full 90 minutes against Club Brugge. He also came up against his future employers, featuring in Atalanta's Champions League meeting with Chelsea in December 2025.
This year he added senior international recognition, making his Italy debut in June friendlies against Greece and Luxembourg. Italian by upbringing, he only became eligible to represent the Azzurri on turning 18.
How he fits at Chelsea
Ahanor is a left-footed defender comfortable at left-back or as a left-sided centre-back — a physical, press-resistant profile who carries the ball out from the back and breaks lines, exactly the type Xabi Alonso's system leans on. On his return he is expected to compete with Levi Colwill for minutes on the left of the back line.
For now, though, the plan is game time elsewhere: reports indicate Ahanor will head out on a season-long loan, with the destination still to be decided.
NiiNii’s view
This is smart, forward-looking business. Landing one of European football's most exciting teenage defenders for £40m — with a proven Serie A and Champions League grounding already banked at 18 — is exactly the kind of sequenced recruitment we want to see. Pair him with Jorrel Hato and the left side of our defence suddenly looks future-proofed for years. Get the loan right, bank a season of regular minutes, then a genuine fight for a first-team spot next term: nail that pathway and this could prove one of the shrewdest deals of the window.
