WHAT KONÉ ACTUALLY IS

Koné is not an Enzo like-for-like, and that’s the point — this would be replacing the function of the role with a different modern profile. He’s a pivot who recovers the ball deep and drives forward with it: strong ball recovery, aggressive without possession, physically dominant in central areas, and genuinely press-resistant when receiving with his back to play. Think a Frenkie de Jong-style carrier — a complete, dynamic two-way midfielder rather than a metronomic deep-lying passer. That profile would complement Moisés Caicedo well, giving Alonso another engine who can win it back and carry through the lines. He’s 25, a France international, and arrives off a strong 2026 World Cup that took Les Bleus to the semi-finals — experience and ceiling in the same package.

KONÉ vs CAMARA — THE PROFILES

They’re not the same player, and the difference is the whole story of these two deals:

Koné wouldn’t be a downgrade on Enzo’s output; he’d be a different, arguably better-balanced solution for how Alonso wants to play. The one caveat: contact is not a bid, and a bid is not a signing. Until money’s on the table at Roma, this is a plan, not a player.

TRANSFER REALITY

Where it actually stands: Chelsea have made contact, Koné is reportedly high on the list, but there’s no official approach to Roma yet — and the Italians hold a strong hand with a contract running to 2029 and a valuation in the €50–55m range. He’s wanted elsewhere, too: Manchester United reached an agreement in principle on personal terms earlier in the window, Atlético saw a €43m offer rejected, and Arsenal and Real Madrid have both been credited with looks.
