Chelsea Close In on Ahanor — Another Atalanta Deal, Another One for the Future

We’re advancing in club-to-club talks for Atalanta’s 18-year-old Italy international — personal terms already agreed and a fee around €40m taking shape. Here’s what we’re actually signing, and what it tells you about how this squad is being built.

The State of Play

Honest Ahanor to Chelsea is real, and it’s moving quickly. Fabrizio Romano reports that we’re now advancing in club-to-club talks with Atalanta, with personal terms already agreed with the player and a good relationship between the clubs off the back of the Palestra deal. Gianluca Di Marzio has negotiations underway and the fee set to exceed €40m, while Football Italia — citing TuttoMercatoWeb and Sky Sport Italia — reports that direct talks have advanced decisively and the operation could be wrapped up by Friday.

For context, the window closes on Tuesday 1 September, so if this is happening, it’s happening now. The pieces reported to be in place — player terms agreed, the clubs on good terms — are usually the ones that mean a deal has legs. The last real hurdle is the fee, and that’s where it gets interesting.

ho Is Honest Ahanor?

If the name’s new to you, here’s the quick version. Ahanor is an 18-year-old defender, born in Aversa in February 2008, and already a senior Italy international — he made his debut back in June. He came through Genoa, made his Serie A bow at 16 against Juventus, and earned a €16m move (plus roughly €4m in add-ons) to Atalanta last summer.

His first season in Bergamo was the breakout: around 35 appearances across all competitions, 28 of them in Serie A, with Champions League minutes including starts. That’s serious exposure for a teenager, and it’s why half of Europe has been circling. He’s under contract until 2028.

On the profile — and this matters — Ahanor is not a like-for-like Cucurella. He’s a versatile left-sided defender: most often a left-sided centre-back in a back three, comfortable at left wing-back, and able to push higher or even into midfield. Italian outlets have floated young-Maldini comparisons (Maldini being his idol), which tells you plenty about both the hype and the ceiling. My read: this is a project with an enormous ceiling, not a plug-and-play left-back for August.

The Atalanta Pipeline

This would be our second deal with Atalanta in a single window. Earlier this summer we signed Marco Palestra — a right-back/wing-back and Serie A Defender of the Season — for a reported €57m plus €3m in add-ons, with Atalanta retaining a 10% sell-on (per Di Marzio and Sky Sport Italia). Palestra was brought in to suit Xabi Alonso’s wing-back-heavy shape; Ahanor fits the same brief from the opposite side.

Two teenagers from the same selling club in one summer is a pattern — and it’s worth being honest about what kind of pattern it is.

What This Actually Is

Here’s

my take rather than the wire copy. Romano’s phrasing is telling: we’re “deciding on the potential future pathway” for Ahanor. Read that alongside his age and the fact he’s a back-three defender by trade, and this doesn’t look like a signing to fix left-back in the next fortnight. It looks like another young asset added to a squad that already leans heavily on youth.

That’s the recurring worry with how we recruit: talent banked early, senior experience thin on the ground, and an actual first-team need — a ready-made replacement for Cucurella — that a €40m 18-year-old doesn’t obviously solve today.

But I’ll be fair, because there’s a smart version of this too. Atalanta paid €16m for him a year ago and he’s already an Italy international. If his trajectory holds, €40m for a player of this ceiling ages very well, and the club relationship that got Palestra done makes the next one easier to negotiate. If we’re going to run a trading model, this is exactly the profile you want to be buying. The question is whether it’s a plan — or just a habit.

Will It Get Done?

The blocker is money, and Atalanta hold the cards. They value Ahanor north of €50m, they’ve already rejected a €34m bid from Brighton this window, and they’ve knocked back two offers in total. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has spent the summer insisting they want to keep their jewels — while carefully leaving the door ajar, noting they’ll be “very attentive” to what lands before the deadline.

A fee “around €40m” sits below that valuation and only marginally above the Brighton bid they already binned, so there’s a gap to close and not much time to close it. With personal terms reportedly done, this comes down to whether the two clubs meet in the middle before Tuesday.
