Front three fire the Blues to victory on Alonso's opening night

Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer all found the net as Xabi Alonso began his Chelsea reign with a thrilling win over our west London neighbours.

If you wanted a statement of intent, you got it inside the first minute. Xabi Alonso had barely settled into his seat before the Blues were in front, and by the time the dust cloud over Craven Cottage had cleared, our new-look front three had announced themselves as the most dangerous attacking unit in the division.

It was chaotic, it was nervy in patches, and it was thoroughly entertaining — but most importantly, it was three points on the road to open the campaign.

A dream start

Alonso could not have asked for a calmer settler. From what looked like a harmless Fulham clearance, Maxence Lacroix rose to win his header deep in our own half, the ball dropped kindly for Palmer, and his clever flick sent Joao Pedro clean through. The Brazilian took one touch to steady himself and lifted a composed finish over Bernd Leno. Roughly half a minute on the clock, and the Blues were ahead.

The goal invited our attackers to play with freedom, and Palmer and Rogers combined sweetly throughout the opening exchanges. But Fulham, energised under new boss Alvaro Arbeloa, refused to sit back. Josh King grew into the contest and levelled midway through the half, breaking into the box after a slick move down our left and drilling a low shot beyond Robert Sanchez at his near post — a strike our keeper will feel he should have kept out.

Rogers marks his debut

The response was everything Alonso would have wanted. We pinned Fulham back, worked several openings, and got our reward four minutes before the break. Palmer picked out Lacroix, who did superbly to wriggle past Jorge Cuenca and pull the ball back from the byline. It skidded across the six-yard box to an unmarked Morgan Rogers, who swept home to open his Chelsea account on his debut. A dream first outing for our summer signing.

Palmer takes centre stage

Four minutes into the second half, the front three combined again — and this time it was Palmer's turn. The move began with Sanchez, whose pass forward was flicked on by Rogers into the path of Joao Pedro. Our No.9 carried it forward, waited for Palmer's overlapping run and slipped him in, and Cole did the rest, sliding a cool finish through Leno's legs to make it 3-1.

Palmer looked back to his brilliant best all evening — sharp, confident and clearly benefiting from an injury-free pre-season and a summer's rest. The kind of performance we had missed for long stretches of last year.

Nervy finish

Naturally, this being Chelsea, we made it interesting. Fulham hit back almost immediately when a long ball caused problems, Timothy Castagne's effort was parried by Sanchez, and Goncalo Garcia was on hand to bundle in the rebound and mark his own debut with a goal.

That set up a tense final half-hour. Antonee Robinson had the best chance to level, but with Sanchez stranded off his line, the full-back dragged his lob well wide — a huge let-off. Substitute Ryan Sessegnon was also denied by Sanchez, who at least redeemed himself late on to help us over the line.

There was even a moment when we thought we had a fourth, Geovany Quenda seeing a shot saved before Joao Pedro turned in the rebound, but the flag was correctly up. It mattered little. The Blues saw out four added minutes to bank the win.

One worry

The night's one sour note came late on, with Palmer signalling to the bench and pulling up mid-dribble before being replaced by Estevao. Fingers crossed it's nothing serious — the last thing we need is to lose our talisman just as he's rediscovered his spark.

What Alonso said

The new boss kept things measured afterwards, declining to single anyone out. He acknowledged we can do better defensively, but framed it all as part of a process — “day one,” as he put it — and noted it's always easier to learn lessons with three points already in the bag.

The verdict

Two new managers, five goals, and a game that swung one way then the other. Fulham will feel they contributed plenty going forward under Arbeloa, but they were carved open too easily. For the Blues, the defensive wobbles and Sanchez's shaky evening are things to iron out — yet with a front three this potent, there's every reason for real optimism about what's ahead.
