Chelsea considering Douglas Luiz loan move as Rosenior targets midfield depth

Chelsea are exploring a move to sign Douglas Luiz on loan for the rest of the season, with the club looking to add quality and depth in midfield as Liam Rosenior’s side continue to fight on multiple fronts in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Luiz is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus, but his involvement at the City Ground has been limited since arriving last August. He has played 13 times for Forest in total, and has started only twice in the Premier League since Sean Dyche replaced Ange Postecoglou as Forest head coach in October, with injuries also disrupting his rhythm earlier in the campaign.

Why Chelsea are looking at this deal

Chelsea’s midfield options look strong on paper, but the availability hasn’t always matched the schedule. Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Andrey Santos, Dario Essugo and Romeo Lavia are the main names competing for minutes. However, injuries have hit rotation hard: Essugo is yet to feature this season, while Lavia has managed only seven appearances. That has increased the load on key starters, especially in a season where Chelsea’s fixture list is relentless.

In that context, Luiz is being viewed as a sensible “ready-now” addition: Premier League-proven, tactically flexible, and capable of giving Rosenior a different profile depending on the opponent and game-state.

The complication: Juventus, Forest, and the fine print

Because Luiz is already on loan, a Chelsea move would require the situation to be reworked. Forest’s deal includes an obligation to buy that is conditional on appearances, with the club also holding a €30m option to buy if he does not hit the required number. With those conditions still in play, Chelsea are monitoring whether a temporary switch becomes realistic for all parties.

Luiz only joined Juventus from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024 for a reported €50m, plus add-ons, but he struggled to establish himself in Turin. This season has followed a similar pattern: flashes of quality, but not enough consistent minutes to build momentum.

What it would mean for Chelsea right now

If Chelsea can land Luiz for the run-in, it’s essentially an insurance policy for a squad pushing deep into competitions. He can operate deeper to help progress play, or shuttle box-to-box to support the press and second balls, which matters when games pile up and intensity drops.

There is one immediate caveat on the European side: if he joins, Luiz would not be eligible for Chelsea’s final Champions League league-phase match against Napoli next Wednesday, because the UEFA registration window does not open again until the start of the knockouts.

Chelsea return to action this Sunday at home to Crystal Palace, while Forest are away to Braga in the Europa League on Thursday night. For now, this one is firmly in the “being explored” category — but it’s a move that makes sense the moment you look at Chelsea’s schedule, injuries, and the need for reliable midfield legs.

This season: quick statframe (Premier League)

If Chelsea do move for Luiz, it would be a classic “win-now depth” play: experienced, tactically versatile, and capable of protecting the legs of key starters as the season hits its heaviest stretch.
