Mudryk Cleared to Return: Chelsea Winger's Doping Ban Resolved
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is free to return to competitive football with immediate effect, bringing an end to a saga that has kept the Ukraine international out of the game for more than 20 months.
The Football Association and Chelsea both confirmed on Friday that the anti-doping proceedings against the 25-year-old had been resolved, following a resolution reached between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the FA.
Why the ban has been lifted
Mudryk was provisionally suspended in December 2024 after a routine urine sample returned an adverse finding for meldonium, a substance that aids stamina and recovery. He was formally charged in June 2025 and, in April this year, handed a four-year ban — the maximum penalty available to the FA for a doping offence. Mudryk was appealing that decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The breakthrough came through a change to WADA's own rules. As the FA explained, updates to its technical document mean that if Mudryk's sample were collected today, the concentration of meldonium detected would not have been reported — and no anti-doping rule violation would have followed. The rule change is not retroactive, but with the case resolved in his favour, Mudryk is no longer ineligible and may return to competition straight away.
An "extremely difficult period"
Chelsea welcomed the outcome in a statement, describing the ordeal Mudryk has faced. The club said it had been an extremely difficult period for the player both professionally and personally, and expressed relief that the matter had reached a conclusion allowing him to return to football.
Mudryk's last appearance in a Chelsea shirt came in a 2-0 Conference League win over Heidenheim on 28 November 2024. He was an unused substitute against Aston Villa days later, and his subsequent absences were initially put down to illness by then-head coach Enzo Maresca before the suspension became public.
What happens now
The winger's return hands Xabi Alonso a fresh attacking option after a lengthy absence. Signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth €70million plus a further €30million in potential bonuses, Mudryk remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031 — meaning Chelsea have every incentive to reintegrate a player they invested heavily in.
After 20 months in the wilderness, the question is no longer whether Mudryk can play, but how quickly he can rediscover the form that made him one of Europe's most exciting young wingers.
The most reasonable outcome for Mudryk under Alonso would be to continue his preseason preparation before finding a loan move for the new season ahead. After missing the last 20months, the last thing Mudryk needs is to fight for scrap minutes, he needs to properly reintegrate himself back into the game and needs consistent minutes to catch up for all of the lost time. Could Strasbourg or a Shaktar return be on the cards for Mudryk?
