Well, here’s a story I wasn’t expecting to be writing in the third week of July. According to Si Phillips at SPTC News, both Barcelona and Bayern Munich are showing an interest in Jorrel Hato — and Chelsea’s position is refreshingly blunt: he is not for sale.

THE REPORT

Per SPTC, this is genuine, top-club interest rather than transfer-window background noise — a marker of just how highly Hato is now rated barely a year on from his move from Ajax. Chelsea have no intention of selling, and it would reportedly take something special to even start the conversation. The figure doing the rounds is £65m as the number that might get the club thinking.

Put that in context. Transfermarkt values Hato at around €40m. So £65m would be a serious premium on a 20-year-old who only signed last summer — which tells you both how good he has become and how firmly we would price any exit. And as ever with these things, I’ll believe the mega-money when I see it.

WHY I’M NOT PANICKING

Here’s my honest take: I don’t think we need to feel insecure about these reports at all. Everything and anything gets entertained and explored in a window — that’s simply how the modern game works. A young defender playing well and attracting looks from Barcelona and Bayern isn’t a crisis; it’s a compliment.

The context makes a sale look even less likely. Hato was brought in as the long-term successor to Marc Cucurella, and with Cucurella now off to Real Madrid, he is effectively our only senior left-back in the building. We haven’t even signed a replacement left-back yet — so shifting the one we’ve got, before we’ve addressed the position at all, makes no sense to me whatsoever.

And there’s a question nobody seems to be asking: do either of these clubs actually have the funds to finance a Hato deal at the sort of number Chelsea would demand? I’d want to see the money on the table before I took any of this too seriously.

THE LEWIS HALL DOMINO

Now for the part that will get Chelsea fans talking. Our dream option at left-back has long been to bring Lewis Hall home — and this Hato story quietly connects to it.

As things stand, Hall has already cooled on the idea of a return this window. But there’s hope behind the scenes that the “Alonso effect” could shift the picture — that the pull of the new project might sway a decision it hadn’t before.

Here’s where it gets interesting. If — and it’s a big if — a Hato sale did open up a squad spot, it would also hand us a guaranteed pot of money to reinvest, and a ready-made slot for Hall to walk straight into. Add in the sell-on clause Chelsea retained when they sold Hall to Newcastle (confirmed by David Ornstein), which would claw back a chunk of any future Hall fee, and you can see how the pieces might, in theory, slot together.

But I’ll be straight with you: I don’t see why we’d need to sell Hato to sign Hall. In my head those two moves aren’t tied to each other at all. If Hato did leave, then yes — we’d need a genuine top-tier option to replace him, and that becomes a separate, expensive problem.

Look, it’s a peculiar story. Two of Europe’s biggest clubs sniffing around a defender we see as a cornerstone of the rebuild, with a Lewis Hall subplot bolted on for good measure. I genuinely don’t know how likely any of it is — probably not very — but windows are windows, and stances can change fast in this game.
