Garnacho For Sale: Smart Business By Chelsea, A Sad One For Him

A permanent exit was always coming — and honestly, I feel for him. Wrong move at the wrong time. But Chelsea played the numbers well, and shifting him at £40m is going to be the hard part.

No Surprise At All

So it's official-ish: Garnacho is up for a permanent sale, and nobody should be shocked. After an inconsistent first season at Stamford Bridge — one Premier League goal, dugout upheaval, never nailing down a starting spot — the writing's been on the wall for a while. Chelsea want a permanent deal, not a loan.

Why I Feel For Him

And here's the odd part — I feel a bit sorry for the lad. I don't think he's a bad character at all. He pushed hard to come to Chelsea, turned down other clubs to do it, and it just… didn't work. Sometimes it's not about attitude or ability, it's timing and fit — and this was the wrong move at the wrong time for him. A year on, he's the odd man out in Alonso's rebuild. That's football, but it's a shame.

Chelsea Played It Smart — As I Said Last Summer

Here's where I'll pat us on the back, because I called this last summer. United wanted £50m. We didn't splash it — the deal got done at a £40m fixed fee, and part of the logic was Geovany Quenda waiting in the wings as the long-term wide option. Why blow £50m on a gamble when your future out there is already lined up?

That discipline matters now. If you're going to move a player back on, recouping £40m is a far easier job than trying to claw back £50m. The lower buy price gives us room.

But credit where it's due: United weren't daft either. They stuck a 10% sell-on clause into the deal — because they knew full well there was every chance Chelsea would move him on down the line. Smart from their side. If we do sell, they get their slice.

The Catch: Good Luck Getting £40m

Now the hard bit. Italian clubs — Napoli, Juventus, Milan among them — have been sniffing around, but interest and an actual £40m permanent bid are two very different things. After a season with one league goal to show for it, who's realistically paying £40m? The long contract to 2032 means Chelsea don't have to fire-sale him, which is the saving grace — but this is going to be a slow one. Don't expect it wrapped up quickly.

Right call to move him on, smart business to have bought low — but with one Premier League goal on the CV, prising £40m out of anyone is going to take all summer.
